Nosedness

Privacy Policy — Nosedness

Last updated: August 2026

The Nosedness app is developed and operated for an academic research study examining the relationship between the nasal breathing cycle and attention performance. This document explains what data the app collects, how it’s stored, and what it’s used for.

What data is collected

  • Photo of the nostril area — taken by you during the experiment, used to analyze the nasal cycle.
  • Subject ID — an identifier you choose yourself, not linked to your name, email, or other identifying details.
  • Self-reported ratings — your sense of nostril openness and alertness level, each round.
  • Reaction time and performance data — results from a reaction-time task and a Go/No-Go task, each round.
  • Wake and sleep hours — stored locally on your device only, used to schedule notifications at appropriate times for you. This data is never sent to a server.

Where the data is stored Data collected during the experiment (aside from wake/sleep hours, as noted above) is stored using a third-party cloud storage service (Appwrite), which serves as the app’s storage infrastructure. Data is not sold and is not shared with any party beyond the storage provider necessary to operate the app.

What the data is used for Data is used solely for the academic research purpose the app was built for. Results shown to you during app use (including on the summary screen at the end of the experiment) are based on the data from the rounds you completed.

Device permissions The app requests camera permission to photograph the nostril area, and notification permission to schedule reminders for experiment rounds. You can revoke these permissions at any time via your device settings.

Data retention and deletion Data is retained for the duration of the research study. If you’d like to request deletion of your data, you can contact us, citing your subject ID.
