How it works

Four times a day, at random times within your waking hours, a notification says “Time to smell!”. You have 15 minutes to open it. The times are random on purpose: the smells you notice when you go looking for them are not the smells that make up daily life.

  1. The first question: are you currently experiencing a smell?

    Smelling something?

Yes or no: smelling nothing is a valid answer too.

  2. Rating how pleasant the smell is, from extremely unpleasant to extremely pleasant

    Rate it

How pleasant, how intense, natural or artificial.

  3. Choosing words that describe the smell from a word bank

    Name it

Pick words from a word bank, then add your own.

  4. Taking a photo of where the smell comes from

    Snap a photo

Of where the smell comes from. No people, please.

  5. Confirmation screen after finishing a questionnaire

    Done

That’s one. Answer 40 and the study is complete.

The science

Olfaction is the least charted of the human senses. SMELLiT records what people actually smell in everyday life, at home, on the street, on the bus: data that no laboratory can produce.

SMELLiT is part of d2smell, an ERC Synergy project of the Weizmann Institute of Science with KTH Royal Institute of Technology, the Max Planck Society and Karolinska Institutet. The study is approved by the Weizmann Institute of Science Institutional Review Board (IRB).
